Advantage of Hairiness in Filtration Yarn

April 8, 2024

MMP produces yarn with various raw materials which are used for producing filter cartridges such as cotton, Nylon, polypropylene, Rayon, glass fiber etc. Apparently, cotton fiber has very good absorbency property, but the disadvantage of cotton fiber is that if it remains in water for a long time, then its starts to degrade, and reduces the life span. The filter will then release an odor due to its surface getting coated with algae. However, cotton is very good option for filtration application, where high temperature prevails, and where polypropylene cannot withstand temperatures.

Amongst all man-made fibers, polypropylene has the least affinity for water. Hence polypropylene could be considered next to glass fiber filters. Glass on the other hand, needs to be handled very carefully due to its brittleness.

Compared to any other fiber, Polypropylene is relatively inert, and hence it is regarded to be the best suited material for filtration application in oil and water applications.

Having the fiber selected, it then has to be converted into yarn by spinning technology for manufacturing the string would filter cartridges. It is important to mention that the yarn made out of continuous filament would not be very effective. The reason for this is that when the continuous filament are twisted together to form a yarn, they will not be hairy. Hairiness is an inherent property of filtration yarn along with its compactness, & its twist level which is achieved at its best by MMP through its friction spinning technology. Hairiness of the yarn is a key role playing factor for particle capturing. Compactness is an indication of the bulkiness, which may reflect in the of yarn diameter, whereas the twist are an indirect indication of compactness / bulkiness of the yarn.

We can conclude that higher twisted yarn would have lower diameter or higher turns per inch, where as a bulky yarn would have higher diameter or fewer turns per inch. Again, compactness depends on the technique that is used while spinning the yarn. MMP has vast experience of the filtration yarn since 1995. Looking at all the factors mentioned above MMP Filtration ensures the following parameters while they make the filtration yarn for the filtration industry.

MMP, by its experience, strives to gives the best filtration yarn to the industry through the support of established customers who has been prominent in supplying wound filters to the industries in India and overseas.
